Criminal and Civil Records
State criminal history is researched for both felony and misdemeanor convictions and pending cases for a minimum of seven years. This search provides a complete picture of an applicant's records at the state reporting level, which may contain data not found at the county level, and encompasses all counties within the state providing a more comprehensive search. The availability of extended search periods varies by state. State criminal history searches encompass all counties within a particular state. Not every state has regulated processes that enable it to offer and maintain a state records repository. Other states have record repositories, but they are unregulated and poorly maintained. Unfortunately, NAS has found that only a handful of states have regulated, well-maintained repositories. If a state does not have a records repository the criminal search will be conducted at the county level. The statewide search offers an additional layer of security to the recruitment process.
